Comprehensive Welder

Overview

The Comprehensive Welder Program is the culmination of the individual Stick, MIG/Flux Cored, and TIG Welding certificates and prepares the individual to work for a wide range of companies in the manufacturing and construction fields.

This program can be completed in one year when taking a one, three-hour class every nine weeks. There is now an option of a morning, afternoon, and evening track to allow students to have the flexibility for a better balance between work, family, and training. If you have the ability to take more than one class in a day, the full program can be completed in less than a year.

  • Students are required to purchase approximately $600-700 worth of welding gear and small hand tools.
  • Courses taken in this program may be applied toward academic program courses. This will be done on a case-by-case basis.

This program is currently eligible for a QuickJobs Scholarship.
Please visit the MTC QuickJobs page to sign up for a free mandatory information session where you will learn how to apply for a scholarship. To be eligible, you must:

  • Attend an information session. Information sessions last approximately two hours and are free to attend.
  • Be a South Carolina resident for 12 consecutive months. Applicants will be required to submit documentation for proof of residency (Driver's license, Beginner's permit, or state issued ID).
  • Not be in default on any federal student loans and not owe MTC or any other college monies.
  • Submit an application. You will need to enter your student ID on the application.
  • Scholarship recipients will be in communication with the Program Director responsible for the program for which they applied.
  • Some programs require clean SLED background checks and clean drug/alcohol tests.

Careers

Welder

Individuals who have completed the Comprehensive Welder Program can find work with a wide variety of industrial, construction, and manufacturing companies. Stick welders often work with structural steel, decking, and joists. Stick welding is also used in repair welding applications on large vehicles or machinery. MIG welders often work in fabrication where the weld is visible and a high-quality weld is needed. Flux Cored welders often work with thicker metal in the manufacturing and construction fields. Flux Cored welding is also used in repair welding applications on heavy vehicles and equipment. TIG welders often work as pipe welders in many settings or in the aerospace industry with non-ferrous metals.
