Tuition Assistance for Training

Training students preparing for class.

How do I know if I'm a training student?

A training student is any student who is taking classes not for academic credit.

Diploma and degree programs are always academic, but certificate programs can be academic or training programs. Check out the top of the program page; if you see "Training Certificate," you're in a training program.

What's the difference with regard to financial aid?

Only academic programs provide college credit, transfer to four-year colleges and universities, and are eligible for federal financial aid (FAFSA). Training programs can usually be completed in a shorter time frame. Training programs are not eligible for federal financial aid, but students may qualify for other scholarships and grant funds, like the ones below!

QuickJobs are career training programs developed for jobs where workers will be in high demand over the next decade. QuickJobs are designed to provide intensive and complete job training; prior experience in a field is not required. Periodically, scholarships may available for select programs.

You must attend a QuickJobs information session to qualify for a scholarship. Awards are contingent upon the availability of funding at the time of the session. View eligibility criteria.

Segal AmeriCorps Education Award

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is a post-service benefit received by participants who complete a term of national service in an approved AmeriCorps program--AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps NCCC, or AmeriCorps State and National. The education award may be used to pay educational costs at eligible post-secondary educational institutions (including many technical schools and GI-Bill approved educational programs), as well as to repay qualified student loans. The dollar amount of a full-time award is tied to the maximum amount of the U.S. Department of Education's Pell Grant, thus it can vary from year to year.  Currently, AmeriCorps members may earn up to the value of two full-time education awards and have seven years from the date they earned each award to use it.

Members can divide up an award and use portions of it at different times before it expires, as long as it is for authorized expenditures. A person could, for example, apply a portion of it to existing qualified student loans and save the remainder to pay for authorized college costs a few years down the road.
