MTC Business Affairs Leadership Elected to State, Regional, and National Offices

Nov 07, 2022

Three Midlands Technical College leaders in the Business Affairs Division have been elected to serve in state, regional, and national offices, all pertaining to the betterment of community colleges and fiscal responsibility.

Vice President for Business Affairs, Debbie Walker, is the 3rd vice president for the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers (SACUBO). As the SACUBO 3rd vice president, Walker will help oversee membership, recruitment activities, and serve as leader on the professional development committee.

“SACUBO seeks to support its members in developing and improving their capabilities in higher education business management. It is an honor to help build the depth and knowledge of the future leaders in the higher education business affairs sector,” said Walker.

Sheila Smith, MTC Associate Vice President for Business Affairs, has been elected President of the Community College Business Officers Association (CCBO). The CCBO is the only organization that provides continuing education for business officers with community colleges from around the nation.

“CCBO is a wonderful professional development opportunity for community college business officers that is centered around current higher education issues. Having been active in the organization since 2012, I am honored to serve as the CCBO president for the next year," said Smith.

MTC Budget Director Angela Graham now sits on the Board of Directors for the Government Finance Officers Association of South Carolina (GFOASC). The organization promotes effective management of government resources with training, certifications, and sharing fiscal practices. Angela has been a member of GFOASC for the past seven years, and during that time, served on the fall and spring conference committees.

“I value my past involvement with GFOASC on special initiatives, and am honored to serve on the GFOASC Board of Directors next year,” said Graham.

The group has approximately 800 members.

For 26 consecutive years, the Government Finance Officers Association national organization has awarded MTC the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The certificate is the highest form of national recognition in the areas of accounting and financial reporting.

“We’ve achieved this success with Debbie, Sheila, and Angela at the helm. They are highly-respected leaders in their fields at the national, regional and state levels who are sharing their knowledge, and know-how with colleges and universities regarding financial responsibility and reporting. Congratulations to Debbie, Sheila, and Angela for representing MTC in their respective offices,” said MTC President Dr. Ronald L. Rhames.
