Midlands Technical College Commissioner Diane Sumpter Awarded Order of the Palmetto

South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto, was bestowed upon Diane E. Sumpter, Midlands Technical College Commissioner, during a ceremony and celebration held February 18, 2026, in Columbia, S.C.
Sumpter was recognized for her enduring leadership, community impact, and unwavering commitment to service that positively influenced countless lives across South Carolina. She has served as a Commissioner of Midlands Technical College since 2010 and has also served as Board Treasurer and chair of multiple Commission committees.
“This prestigious recognition is a testament to Diane’s dedication to service and her lasting impact on Midlands Technical College and communities across South Carolina,” said Dr. Greg Little, president of Midlands Technical College. “We are incredibly proud to see her honored with this award.”
The Order of the Palmetto is awarded by the Governor of South Carolina to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary lifetime achievement, service, and contributions to the state and its citizens.
The ceremony featured official remarks from elected officials, community leaders, and family representatives, as well as the formal presentation of the Order of the Palmetto certificate by Senator Darrell Jackson. A tribute video highlighting Sumpter’s legacy and lifelong service was also presented.
The evening included community reflections and acceptance remarks by Sumpter, followed by a reception and fellowship with guests, family, colleagues, and supporters.
The ceremony was by invitation and brought together leaders from government, business, faith, and civic organizations to celebrate one of South Carolina’s most distinguished citizens.
