Success Stories

Heather Williams, RDH

“When I look back on my life since graduation, I hear my MTC instructors' voices telling me 'Heather, you can change the world.”

Heather's two-year associate degree and end of the year class project gave her the start she needed as a dental hygienist. She was able to work in an office, be a mom and also obtain my Bachelor’s degree from St. Petersburg College online.

"What's so great about the faculty at Midlands Technical College? They make you feel like you can change the world!

When I started out in the dental hygiene program, I knew I was in the best program.  I just didn’t realize how important the faculty would be in encouraging me to live out a dream.

My two-year associate degree and end of the year class project gave me the start I needed as a dental hygienist. I was able to work in an office, be a mom and also obtain my Bachelor’s degree from St. Petersburg College online. But it was a family move to Colorado that changed everything.

After working in an office for a few years, I realized I wanted to do more by creating a children's mobile dental unit that traveled to schools. My dream was to give to children what many took for granted: a safe place with access to dental care. I would provide cleanings, fluoride, sealants and education all while they were at school and parents didn't have to be present.

I leaned on my Midlands Technical College education and the push that the faculty gave me. With the support of my husband, family and friends, I fulfilled my dream and started Motor Mouth, Mobile Dental Hygiene for Colorado's Kids. Motor Mouth is completely mobile, currently sees patients in 12 schools in the Colorado Springs area and during the last four years, has treated more than 3,500 patients.

With funding I received through a Wrigley Company Foundation Community Service Grant, I was able to purchase new mobile equipment, more supplies and donate numerous dental cleanings at the end of last school year to children who normally wouldn't have received care. Motor Mouth also added two new hygienists, and we are expanding our services.

When I look back on my life since graduation, I hear my MTC instructors' voices telling me 'Heather, you can change the world.'

Well, I am not sure if I changed the world, but I know without a shadow of a doubt I changed the lives of so many children in Colorado. My instructor at MTC taught me that everyone in the world, no matter how big or small, is important and it's our job to show them that."
