"Building Her Career from the Ground Up"

Apr 10, 2026

In the March 2026 edition of the SkillsUSA Executive Update, Midlands Technical College (MTC) student Eva Carroll was highlighted for her excellence in the TeamWorks category of the SkillsUSA National Championship. Last June, Carroll was the only female medalist in the TeamWorks college/post-secondary division.

The TeamWorks competition atSkillsUSAis one of their signature events, bringing together teams of four students to complete a construction project. This competition requires skills in carpentry, roofing, electrical work, plumbing, and masonry. Carroll and her team have earned the opportunity to return to the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference this June to compete for gold.

An excerpt from the article:

“It is pretty cool to go up there and stick out not just because I’m a girl, but being a girl in this field,” she said. “I don’t have the same physical strength but I can work as hard as the guys. Some of them do this every day as their job, and I still outshined them.”

Robbie Sharpe, program director for Midlands’ Building Construction Technology program and the TeamWorks advisor, describes Carroll as a generational talent.

“When she walks into class, she rolls up her sleeves, pays attention and she will always ask why. She is hungry to learn and carries herself well,” Sharpe said. “In competition as well, she is right in the thick of everything. She is an outstanding young woman and I think she is going to be very successful.”
