MTC Alert

January 23, 2025 – 

Winter Weather Update: We’re monitoring forecasts for wintry weather that could impact the state over the weekend. We will provide an update no later than Sunday, January 25, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Please take this time to confirm your contact information and/or sign up for MTC text alerts on MyMTC. 

For faculty and staff, policies on telecommuting and reporting to work remain in effect. 

MTC Alerts 
MTC uses text messages to communicate emergency and important college information. To receive alerts, all MTC students and employees should verify their cell phone numbers on MyMTC - midlandstech.edu/alerts

Statewide Updates 
Visit the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) website at www.scemd.org for real-time links to weather reports, road conditions, and evacuation routes.

MTC Closings

In accordance with Executive Order 2025-17, closings in Richland and Lexington counties are determined by the S.C. Governor in coordination with state emergency management officials. Midlands Technical College will communicate timely details to students, faculty, staff, and the community when closings occur. 

Information for Students and Community Members 

Class Cancellations
When college is closed, all academic and training (CCE) classes will be cancelled. Professors will communicate with students on any necessary make-up work. 

Campus Access

When the college is closed, only essential/critical personnel and first responders are permitted on campus. During closures all internal and external college events will be cancelled, and all campus resource offices will be closed.

Faculty and Staff Information

When the college is closed:

  • Essential/critical personnel are required to report to work, as needed, to ensure the continuity of operations. Essential/critical personnel who are unable to work remotely for any additional required work time will be eligible for hazardous weather leave.
  • Non-essential employees with remote work capabilities are expected to telecommute during hazardous weather closures.
  • Employees without remote work capabilities will be eligible for hazardous weather leave.
  • The HRM Department maintains a record of employees who are eligible for hazardous weather leave. Supervisors will need to send notification to hrmbenefits@midlandstech.edu if there are extenuating circumstances (e.g. power outages) impacting an employees’ remote work capabilities in order for hazardous weather leave to be applied. Compensatory leave will not be given for hours worked during hazardous weather/college closings.  
  • Individuals who are unable to telecommute should discuss circumstances with their supervisors. (Supervisors will notify employees of their statuses (essential/critical, non-essential, and/or those without remote work capabilities).
