Midlands Technical College Finishes Number Two in the Nation at SkillsUSA
Jun 30, 2025

Midlands Technical College’s (MTC’s) Building Construction Technology team won silver in the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference, held June 23-27, 2025 in Atlanta, GA. The award marked the fourth consecutive year MTC’s building construction team finished in the top three nationally.
This year, MTC’s student team included Eva Caroll, Hank Cooper, Kameron Knight, and Kaleb Lawrie. Their two-day construction project, the “TeamWorks” Competition Build, demonstrated their ability to work together using carpentry, roofing, electrical, plumbing, and masonry skills. Final judgement takes presentation skills, building codes, jobsite safety and cleanliness, material organization, proper use of tools, and the rate of completion of the project into account.
To participate in the national competition, all individuals and teams had to earn top honors at SkillsUSA’s state-level competitions. MTC was represented by the following programs at the SkillsUSA conference:
- Building Construction Technology
- Carpentry
- Welding
- Precision Machining
- Industrial Electricity
- Web Design and Developer
“Our performances in recent years have created an expectation for us to uphold, and it’s on us to live up to that standard from the moment we arrive at SkillsUSA each year,” said Robbie Sharpe, Program Director at Midlands Technical College. “As faculty, we’re thrilled to see their work speak for itself each year, and we couldn’t be prouder to be a part of something this special as a program.”
“SkillsUSA is a unique opportunity where talent and potential equal achievement on a national scale,” said Dr. Greg Little, President at Midlands Technical College. “To know that our students, who proudly represent our college and community, are taking on the best the country has to offer and rising to the top is remarkable.”
The SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference was estimated to bring together more than 18,000 students, teachers, and education leaders; plus representatives from 850 national corporations, trade associations, businesses and labor unions. For MTC, SkillsUSA has become an annual event, with the college continually looking to expand participation and achievement.
The team of Building Construction students were sponsored by Mungo Homes. Our students could not have completed this achievement without their support.
