"Lexington District One partners with Lexington Medical Center, Midlands Technical College, to develop medical assisting program"

Lexington County School District One announces a new medical assisting program, housed at Lexington Technology Center, in partnership with Lexington Medical Center and Midlands Technical College. Rising Lexington One 10th graders can apply now for classes that begin in August 2023.

“The medical assisting program at Lexington District One will serve as a gateway and accelerated pathway to the medical field,” says Bryce Myers, Lexington Technology Center executive director. “Students can become a full-time medical assistant, or they can use that certification as a foundation to pursue advanced degrees and certifications while working and making connections with health care workers inside the Lexington Medical Center organization as a medical assistant.”

Beginning sophomore year, students will travel to Lexington Technology Center to enroll in various health science classes, including medical assisting, medical terminology, basic medical laboratory techniques, anatomy & physiology, medical assisting office skills, medical office clinical skills, and medical office management. Students will be required to take first aid and CPR prior to enrollment in the program. In their senior year, students will be immersed in clinical training, provided by Lexington Medical Center.

After high school graduation, students can then enroll in Midlands Technical College to complete the required clinical practice hours. Once the program is completed and all requirements are met, students will earn a medical assisting academic certificate from Midlands Technical College and may be employed with Lexington Medical Center immediately.

“As Lexington Medical Center’s Physician Network continues to grow to meet the needs of our community, we need to ensure a pipeline of qualified, caring and trained employees,’ said Cam Crow, Vice President of Physician Network Operations at Lexington Medical Center. “This innovative partnership allows us to meet the needs of the future and provide health care jobs and growth opportunities to local students in our community.”
Additionally, students may have the opportunity to continue their studies at Midlands Technical College to receive an associate degree in applied science and health care, in as little as one semester.

“Midlands Technical College is proud to expand our partnerships with Lexington District One and Lexington Medical Center to collaboratively create a much-needed workforce pipeline of well-educated health care professionals,” said MTC Provost Dr. Barrie Kirk. “Not only does this partnership have long-term potential to change lives by providing students an education for sustainable careers, it can also help save lives of future patients.”

This partnership is part of the Lexington District One Networked Community (L1NC).
