What is MidlandsLIFE?
MidlandsLIFE is a two-year program at Midlands Technical College designed to provide inclusive educational opportunities and workforce preparation to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our goal is to support students as they pursue certificates and industry recognized credentials that align with their career goals and equip them with the skills needed for success in the workplace.
Vision
Guided by the principle that Every Maverick Matters, our vision is to create an accessible, affordable, and individualized learning environment that prepares students with intellectual and developmental disabilities for workforce readiness by equipping them with the skills, experiences, and support needed to achieve meaningful employment and full participation in society.
Mission
Our mission is to empower youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities to lead their educational journeys and support them in their pursuit of industry-recognized credentials/certificates in fields of study that align with their preferences, interests and strengths.
Our Focus Areas
Academics: Students will engage in coursework in various fields of study that align with their preferences and interests.
Employment: Students will engage in career exploration, develop career goals that align with their preferences and qualifications, and participate in internships that complement their professional education and training.
Social and Community Engagement: Students will develop and refine social skills to make friends, network with peers, teachers and employers, and access community resources.
Personal Development: Students will develop and practice self-determination skills (e.g., self-awareness, decision-making, advocacy, and goal setting).

- Application Eligibility Criteria
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Documentation of intellectual and developmental disability.
Graduated or exited High School.
Possess basic math skills and the ability to use a calculator.
Minimum fifth grade reading level preferred.
Can utilize technology (cell phone, laptop, etc.) on a basic level.
Demonstrate ability to maintain appropriate social and emotional behavior.
Must be able to navigate the campus independently and safely.
Desire and motivation to attend college and continue learning.
Desire and motivation to work.
Ability to meet personal needs without assistance.
Has the ability to independently self-administer and manage medication, specialized dietary, and/or medical needs. Note: Midlands LIFE personnel are not available to manage/administer medication and take no responsibility for specialized diets or medical needs.

- What kind of candidates are you looking for?
We are looking for students who have a strong desire to continue learning and are eager and motivated to enter the workforce. Please see the applicant eligibility criteria for more information.
- What is the program's length?
MidlandsLIFE is a two-year program.
- Can I attend if I’m still in high school?
No. Applicants must have graduated or exited high school to attend the program, but can apply to the program during your final year of high school.
- Is a high school diploma required?
No. A high school diploma is not required for admission into the MidlandsLIFE program. However, some academic and corporate and continuing education (CCE) programs do require a high school diploma for enrollment.
- Which MTC programs can I enroll in if I don’t have a high school diploma?
Programs that do not require a high school diploma for enrollment include:

- Do students live on campus?
No. Midlands Technical College is a non-residential institution. Therefore, students do not live on campus. They come to campus for classes and activities, then return home when their day is done.
- Do students in this program participate in student organizations on campus and/or in campus-wide events?
Yes! Our MidlandsLIFE students are a part of the Maverick family and welcome to join our organizations and participate in college-wide events.
