"Student-led design envisions wellness park, grocery store at site for proposed new OC courthouse"

Sep 08, 2025

The Oasis - wellness-based park and grocery space.

The work of Midlands Tech architectural students recently earned a headline in the Times and Democrat of Orangeburg.

It is from an architectural theory class led by professor Cierra Davies. The students developed a plan that would complement Orangeburg County's work to build new county courthouse.

An excerpt from the T&D:

"Orangeburg deserves something that is going to be an eye-catcher, it deserves something that is going to be on the cutting edge of architecture," said Stanley "Wise" Shannon, a sophomore in the college's architectural program. "It deserves something that will be a magnet of revitalization...."

Shannon, along with fellow students, Aron Smith and Javion Latimer, have envisioned the site as being a green space gathering spot for the community or what they have coined, "The Oasis."

According to the project design, "The Oasis" would be complete with a wellness-based park and grocery space. The design and proposed project will be submitted as part of a national architectural design competition.
