Midlands Technical College Holds Inaugural Fall Commencement

Dec 11, 2023

Midlands Technical College (MTC) graduated 659 students during the fall 2023 semester. The college awarded 483 associate degrees, 37 diplomas, and 245 certificates.

At the inaugural fall commencement held at the Colonial Life Arena, the arena was lit with the smiles and joy that came from graduates knowing that they marked a significant milestone in their educational and professional pursuits.

During the event, MTC posthumously awarded the late State Senator John Scott with an honorary degree in humane letters. Senator Scott’s widow, Mrs. Joan Scott, was present and accepted the award on his behalf.

“Senator Scott was a valued friend of the college,” stated MTC President Dr. Ronald L. Rhames. “Over the decades, he worked tirelessly to bring attention and resources to the importance of education and training opportunities for all members of our community as a pathway to a better quality of life and economic success.”

As the afternoon continued, MTC alumnae and local broadcast journalist, Sierra Artemus, addressed the graduates. Artemus is a 2015 graduate of MTC, earning her associates degree in arts.

She challenged the graduates to push for themselves, to not settle for less than their worth.

“A degree is a tool, a key if you will. But what doors it opens, is up to you,” said Artemus.
