Interior Decorator

This practical program provides the maximum benefit to students interested in decorating or in enhancing their existing skills. Specifically created to offer a detailed survey of interior decorating in a short time frame, this program uses video lessons, off-campus field study, and hands-on labs plus regular classroom sessions to provide students with the necessary skills to compete successfully for an entry level position in the interior decorating job market. Certificates are awarded to students who successfully complete the required courses and an individual project. Classes include three Thursday field trips which may meet during the day. Separate costs for supplies to be purchased by the student are approximately $40.

Interior Decorating, Beginning

Part 1 of the Certificate Program. Fundamental theories of decorating are introduced enabling students to apply beginning skills. Lessons include floor-plan drafting, traffic flow, space and furniture arranging, furniture history and period styles, and a beginning analysis of color and pattern relationships. Students will complete a project based on skills learned. One offsite field trip and the last class will meet on a Thursday.

Interior Decorating, Intermediate

Prerequisite: Interior Decorating, Beginning. Part 2 of the Certificate Program. Color and pattern, window treatments, fabric applications, carpet and oriental rugs, wall coverings, and painted finishes are covered. Estimate and calculate yardage for window treatments, carpet and wallpaper. Apply floor-planning skills to a project. One offsite field trip and the last class will meet on a Thursday.

Interior Decorating, Advanced

Prerequisite: Interior Decorating, Intermediate. Part 3 of the Certificate Program. Final theories include blueprint reading, electrical and lighting, accessories and trends, cost estimations and the decorator/client business relationship. The final project utilizes all skills to prepare a furniture and color/pattern layout, and cost schedule. One offsite field trip and the last class will meet on a Thursday.
