Real Pathways: From MTC degree to doctorate – MTC is foundation for success
Dr. Cliff Marsh entered MTC as a first-generation college student, graduated with an Associate in Arts, and went on to receive his bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees. He credits MTC for providing the foundation for his success. Here is his story in his own words.
“I am a clinical social worker, and I credit MTC with providing the foundation for my success. I have a passion for working with non-traditional students, and the things I learned at Midlands Technical College helped me discover that’s what I wanted to do.
“In the late 1990s, I entered Midlands Technical College and became the first college student in my family. I worked so hard, and after feeling like I was doing great in my classes, I asked to see my transcript. It turns out I was taking tutorial courses! But those 00- and 100-level classes are what provided the foundation to help me succeed with the rest of my MTC courses, and they were especially useful when I transferred to the University of South Carolina (USC) a few years later.
“After graduating from USC with an undergraduate degree in sociology, I then went on to get my master’s degree in social work. But that wasn’t all for me. I then got my second master’s in criminal justice in 2005. My academic career continued when I moved to Washington, D.C. and completed my education specialist (Ed.S.) degree in leadership from Walden University, where I also went on to earn my doctorate of education in 2011.
“It was in 2015 that I moved back home to Columbia and became a military family life counselor at Shaw Air Force Base. I love what I do, and I love the people I work with.
“I will always remember my professors at MTC. Sometimes I serve as an adjunct professor at two online colleges, and the things I learned at Midlands Technical College are still the same things I teach my students.”
