The Midlands Technical College (MTC) Foundation was recently awarded $20,000 by the Flex Foundation to provide tuition assistance for students who wish to enroll in MTC Advanced Manufacturing programs.

The Flex Foundation is the grant-making arm of Flex, the Sketch-to-Scale™ solutions provider that designs and builds intelligent products for a connected world.

“We are grateful for the generosity of the Flex Foundation,” said MTC President Dr. Ronald L. Rhames.  “Providing skilled employees for new and expanding businesses and industries is such a vital part of growing the economy, and improving the quality of life in the Midlands.  The Flex Foundation is helping MTC expand access to more students who need these important skills.”

MTC named a classroom in its new Advanced Manufacturing and Skilled Crafts Center after the Flex Foundation in appreciation for the gift.

Less than a year ago Midlands Technical College opened its 34,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing and Skilled Crafts Center. The center is the home to many of MTC’s programs that prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing and skilled crafts, such as Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Mechanics, Industrial Electricity, Industrial Maintenance, and Mechatronics. MTC invested $5.35 million in the building and equipment to better train a sustainable pipeline of technical talent to meet local industries’ skilled workforce needs.

The needs of the manufacturing industry in the Midlands and the state are growing.  In the past five years, South Carolina has increased manufacturing jobs by 5.1 percent, outpacing the overall gain in the United States of 3.3 percent.  There are more than 5,000 manufacturing businesses in the state.

To keep up with the growing manufacturing industry, MTC has received state and private support for equipment and scholarship money to grow participation in its manufacturing and skilled crafts programs.  Scholarships are available for many of MTC’s programs that support the manufacturing sector.

The funds from the Flex Foundation will cover the financial gap often experienced by socio-economically disadvantaged students.

“Midlands Technical College is very dedicated to preparing job-ready employees for these areas,” said Rhames.

“The Flex Foundation is committed to supporting programs that provide quality education for all,” said Kelly Hampton, vice president, Corporate Marketing and Global Citizenship, at Flex. “We are proud to be helping MTC train even more students in the skills necessary for a career in Advanced Manufacturing.”
