This course is a survey of western civilization from ancient times to 1689, including the major political, social, economic, and intellectual factors shaping western cultural tradition.

Robert A. Gilmer earned a doctoral degree in history at the University of Minnesota in 2011, specializing in environmental and American Indian history and has served as a post-doctoral fellow for the Institute for Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina. He teaches a variety of courses in the History Program for the Humanities Department at Midlands Technical College, including both halves of Western Civilization, both halves of the US survey, and Native American history. He has written articles for the Journal of Mississippi History, Environmental Management, and The Radical History Review, and is currently working on a book manuscript examining Cherokee involvement in a series of controversies surrounding the construction of the Tellico Dam.
