Doris W. Gilliam is a a Spanish Instructor and Foreign Language Coordinator in the Humanities Department. She holds a Ph. D. in Humanities with a concentration in Latin American Studies from Florida State University (2013). Her M.A. degree (University of Florida, 1987) is in Spanish, with a Language concentration. Her research interest is in examining contemporary Afro-Brazilian women’s writing through the African Womanist lens. (Dr.) Gilliam has taught Spanish, Portuguese and French throughout her thirty plus years of college and university instruction. Her teaching specialization at Midland Technical College is in Beginner and Intermediate Spanish language instruction. Gilliam’s non-academic interests are music, art and theater. She plays djembe and clarinet in various local music ensembles including Cultural Expressions, Sweet Lady Drummers and the Congaree New Horizons Band.
