Do I Have to Take Foreign Language Placement Test?

Yes, students who, within the last five years have studied the language in high school for more than two years and have received high school credit for heir work or those who know something of the language through exposure must take the placement test. This is test is used to determine the appropriate course level for students planning to enroll in French or Spanish language courses. Students are scheduled for a foreign language placement examination by one of the following ways:

  1. Contacting the Student Assessment Center prior to the start of classes,
  2. Enrolling in one of the foreign language courses and upon recommendation from the instructor during the first three days of classes, and arrange for testing by contacting the Student Assessment Office.

What if I have never taken a foreign language class or I had the class more than five years ago?

Any person who has never taken a foreign language class in high school or who has had the class more than five years ago are not required to take the Foreign Language Placement Test. Those students enroll in FRE 101 or SPA 101.
