Home Succeeding at college Becoming a successful student

Another important factor in success is your ability to prioritize and manage your time effectively. Remember, a week only has 168 hours in it! Don't procrastinate; do things now! Set short-term and long-term goals. Use a calendar/planner to remind yourself of commitments and goals.
  • Set priorities based on your goals.
  • Create a time-table/deadline for completing your goals and tasks. Review and rework goals and tasks as necessary.
  • Establish a balanced routine between school, work and family.
  • Be realistic and flexible in your plans. Don't take on too much. Make sure you are able to complete your tasks.
You may want to follow this suggestion for a manageable course load in college:
  • If you don't work, 12 credits in your first term. 12 or more subsequent terms.
  • If you work part-time, 3-6 credits in your first term, 6-9 after.
  • If you work full-time, 3 credits in your first term, possibly 6 after.
