Credit/Debit Card Service Fee

  1. Why is a fee being charged to process my credit/debit card?

MTC is committed to providing students and their families a range of options for paying their educational expenses. The credit/debit card payment method has become expensive because of the fees charged to MTC for credit or debit card transaction processing. College payment of this fee reduced tuition dollars available for programs and services for all students. Therefore, beginning October 2013, a service fee will be charged on all credit/debit card payment transactions in the amount of 2.5% of each transaction. This service fee applies to all credit or debit card payments made online, by phone or in person at the Cashier window.

  1. Why is the service fee 2.5%? How was that percentage established?

The 2.5% is the fee charged by Midlands Technical College’s third party credit/debit card processor, Official Payments, to cover the credit/debit card transaction fees charged by credit/debit card companies.

  1. Is there a way I can avoid paying the service fee?

Yes. Academic (credit-seeking) students may:

  1. Pay online with an e-check for tuition and fees only, an electronic debit to their checking or savings account.

  2. Mail a check to Midlands Technical College, ATTN: Cashiers Office, PO Box 2408, Columbia, SC 29202. Please always include your MTC student ID number on the check.

  3. Bring a check to the Cashier window at any of the campus locations. Please always include your MTC student ID number on the check.

Corporate and Continuing Education students may:

  1. Mail a check to Midlands Technical College, ATTN: Corporate and Continuing Education Registration, PO Box 2408, Columbia, SC 29202, along with your completed class registration.

  2. Bring a check to the Cashier window at any of the campus locations, then call (803) 732-0432 to register for your class.

  1. If I make a credit/debit card payment in error, will my service fee be refunded?

No. The service fee is not refundable.

  1. Will the 2.5% service fee that I am charged be included on my student account breakdown and statement?

The service fee will not appear separately on your student account or on your MTC receipt statement. However, if you paid online, you will receive an email notifying you of a successful payment, showing the amount of payment, the amount of service fee and the total payment.

  1. How will my student account payment and 2.5% service fee payment appear on my credit/debit card statement?

Two separate transactions will appear on your credit/debit card statement. One transaction for the student account payment and one transaction for the 2.5% service fee.
