Founding of SUCCEEDS Spring 1993 Meeting at Clemson where idea for the organization was first explored August 1993 Marcia Wallenius charged the organizational committee to form a professional state organization, suggest a name and a structure for the officers and bylaws. Fall 1993 Task Force completed the bylaws, prepared a slate of officers, decided on dates and locations for initial meetings and prepared written information to disseminate to prospective members. Spring 1994 Prepared Articles of Incorporation, applied for 501(C) (3) status, consulted with tax accountants, published the Affidavit of Publication (March 1994) in the Post & Courier, and received the Certificate of Incorporation (April 1, 1994). Conferences April 29, 1994 Inaugural meeting. College of Charleston . Program included an overview of services at Lander and at Trident Technical College. Chartering of the organization and election of officers occurred at this meeting. October 7, 1994 Midlands Technical College, Airport Campus. Speakers were Sharon Bellwood, Advocate, South Carolina Protection and Advocacy and a panel of 5 speakers regarding services for the deaf and the blind. March 10, 1995 University of South Carolina. The day began with information provided by James Lemon, Office of Civil Rights, Atlanta, GA. He was followed by Dorothy Parker, Sue Nelson, and Cleva Hutchenson, who spoke on “The Evolution of the Transitional Living Center at USC.” November 3, 1995 Johnson and Wales University. Assistive Technology Fair. April 29, 1996 Clemson University. Two speakers, Ernest Brewer and Connie Hollingsworth, provided information on “Grant Writing and Funding Sources for Disability Services in Post-Secondary Education.” September 27, 1996 Lander University. Mr. Frank Russeau of the St. Nicholas Speech and Hearning Center, was the featured speaker. His presentation was entitled “Central Auditory Processing Disorder, Specified Speech Deficit, and Their Imapct on the Education Process.” Dr. Richard Simensen then spoke on “Treatment Strategy for ADHD and from Diagnoses for Conditions Co-morbid with ADHD.” March 28, 1997 South Carolina State Museum. Linda Lucas Walling, Professor of Library and Information Science and Edward Coolie, III, Exhibit Specialist for the State Museum spole separately regarding “Making Programs and Services Accessible.” September 26, 1997 University of South Carolina/Spartanburg. SUCCEEDS Discussion and Planning Meeting. February 26, 1998 Midlands Technical College, Airport Campus. A SUCCEEDS discussion meeting regarding “Statewide Testing Initiative” was followed by a teleconference on “Legal Insights and Accommodations,” sponsored by Midlands Technical College and the University of Georgia. May 28, 1998 The Clarion Townhouse, Columbia, SC. Bob Doesickle, Office of Civil Rights, spoke to SUCCEEDS regarding the appropriatness and reasonable nature of various accommodations. November 9, 1998 The Sheraton Hotel/Lockwood, Charleston, SC. SUCCEEDS co-sponsored a conference entitled “Connecting Families, Agencies, and Schools: The Bridge to a New Century.” March 24, 1999 Commission on Higher Education. SUCCEEDS forum covering: 1) State-Wide Psychological Guidelines; 2) LIFE Scholarship; 3) Centralized Testing Grant Proposal; and 4) Texts-On-Tape (Recent Litigation and Guidelines for Students with Disabilities). September 29, 1999 Limestone College. Richard Kuffel, South Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation spoke on “The Reauthorization of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, As Amended.” Stephen Dawes, Furman University, addressed the conference on “Understanding LD/ADHD Tests and How to Evaluate A Psychological Assessment.” March 28, 2000 Fort Jackson Education Center, Columbia, SC. Case studies from various SUCCEEDS institutions preceded a Technology Expo held at Fort Jackson. October 12 & 13, 2000 Madren Conference Center at Clemson University. Presentations by Salome Heyward, Esq. on "Higher Education & Disability Law: Faculty Rights & Responsibilities" and Brenda Nyforth from the the Atlanta Office of Civil Rights on "Office of Civil Rights Update on Current Issues." June 1, 2001 Beltline Campus of Midlands Technical College. Presentation by Laurie Ford, Ph.D. on the development of the Woodcock-Johnson III. October 19, 2001 Airport Campus of Midlands Technical College. Marcia Kolvitz, Ph.D., Associate Director for the Post Secondary Education Consortium at the University of Tennessee spoke on "Ethical Considerations in Human Services Settings. March 15, 2002 Furman University. Mr. LaMondrè Pough, a motivational speaker from Columbia, S.C., spoke on being a student with a disability. November 7, 2002 Airport Campus of Midlands Technical College. Discussion of the future of SUCCEEDS, moderated by Jay Ostrowski of People Development, Inc. April 27, 2003 College of Charleston. J. Michael West, Ph.D. of Carolina Neurobehavioral Associates, LLC and the Department of Pediatrics, MUSC made a presentation on "Use of Assistive Technology with Psychiatric Impairments" and Marsha Tennant made a presentation on Project Sight. October 23, 2003 Francis Marion University. Jane Benson, MA, CPCC, the Director of the Learning and Disability Services and Certified Co-Active Coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill made a presentation on "ADHD Coaching in Higher Education." Bichevia Greene from the Commission on Higher Education gave an update on information from the Commission. April 23, 2004 10th Anniversary Meeting at EdVenture Museum in Columbia, S.C. Panel discussion on transition issues with Katherine Felder - S.C. Dept. of Education Office of Exceptional Children, Rosemary Sanders - Transition Specialist with Richland School District 1, and Shannon Lindsay of S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation. Pamela Niesslein, Ph.D., charter and founding member of SUCCEEDS delivered the keynote address. Founding and charter members present were recognized. November 5, 2004 Meeting held at Midlands Technical College, Airport Campus in Columbia, S.C. Roundtable discussion about integration of students with disabilities into campus life. Ms. Stephanie Mignone of Charleston, S.C. spoke to the group about Asperger's Syndrome. Ms. Bobbie Lindstrom and Ms. Judy Steele, both of College of Charleston, facilitated a roundtable discussion on "Finding Your Way Out" - evacuation plans and procedures for colleges and universities. March 9 - 10, 2005 Members attended and hosted a booth at the S.C. Assistive Technology Expo. in Greenville, S.C on March 9. A meeting for networking and sharing of best practices was held on March 10 at the Phoenix Inn in Greenville.
