                   Practical Nursing

The Career

Practical nurses are prepared to give basic, therapeutic, rehabilitative and preventive care to clients with commonly occurring health problems in a variety of health care settings. The practical nurse practices within the role of a dependent provider of care under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician.  Practical nurses are recruited by acute care hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitations centers, clinics, and physicians' offices.

The Program

Practical Nursing at Midlands Technical College is designed to help students develop basic nursing skills in medical, surgical, obstetric, and pediatric nursing. The course of study balances classroom instruction with relevant clinical experience and provides the opportunity for students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective practitioners of practical nursing.

Students will develop the technical skills necessary to care for people with health needs as well as learn the technical language of the medical field. Through hours of experience in the clinical lab and clinical setting, students become familiar with the nursing skills necessary to deliver practical nursing care.

The Practical Nursing program is fully accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and the South Carolina Board of Nursing . Graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN, the SC Board Licensing Examination, and after satisfactory completion will be designated as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN's).
