If I come to work for Michelin, what will my job be? What is that job like?
You will be working as a Mechanical Technician. The Michelin (Lexington Facility) is actually two plants located on the same site. The older facility manufactures passenger auto tires and the newer facility manufactures large truck (and other commercial) tires. The facility is a very clean, modern manufacturing facility. The plant(s) are highly automated. Graduates of the MTC EET program would be trained to service, program and maintain those automated systems or function as electronic (and electrical) maintenance personnel. The job will require a basic knowledge of computers and programmable logic controllers. Many of the Michelin systems are designed and built by Michelin, so each technician would be trained by Michelin to work on these specialized systems.
Does the part-time job have benefits?
Answer: Yes.
How much do the part-time jobs pay? Would I get raises?
Starting pay is $9 per hour. Raises will be considered on an individual basis.
Is this considered an internship or just a scholarship? Are there any college credits attached?
This is just a scholarship and employment program. No college credits are awarded for your employment with Michelin.
Does passing the test guarantee I’ll be a Michelin Scholar?
No. Once you pass the test, you will be scheduled for an interview. Candidates for the scholarship are based on the test and the interview process.
What if I don’t like the program? Do I have to reimburse Michelin?
No. You have no financial obligation to Michelin.
What’s on the test? How can I prepare?
Testing consists of the PTI Numerical test (30 questions) + the Bennett Mechanical test (68 questions). Tested areas include:
Industrial Reading—reading ability
Applied Math—without a calculator
Computational Math—without a calculator
Mechanical Aptitude—mechanical reasoning
Problem Solving—general reasoning
It is difficult to prepare for this test. However, it is a good idea to review algebra and geometry. You might also want to pick up a study guide for a mechanical aptitude test. In addition, review the basic principles of physics.
After completing the program, am I guaranteed a position at Michelin?
No. But completing the program makes you a good candidate for employment. The hiring decision is entirely up to Michelin and there are more tests you must pass.
Do I have to work at Michelin while I am enrolled as a scholarship student? If so, what are the details?
Yes. You must work at Michelin at least 20 hours a week. Your work schedule will be customized so as not to interfere with your classes.
