Admissions Information

Program Entrance Requirements:

  • High School transcript or its equivalent (high school credits in mathematics/science/English [I.e. algebra, biology, English] are recommended).
  • Observation in clinical setting (may be completed after interview) by entry date.
  • TOEFL Test for international students.
  • A successful interview by the Program Interview Committee is required for acceptance to MLT Phase II.
  • Emotional and physical ability to carry out normal activities of medical laboratory practice as determined by completing Student Health Form and Immunizations prior to program entry.
  • Satisfactory drug screen and criminal background check prior to start date.
  • Application to Midlands Technical College.
  • Designate MLT as major of choice.
  • Enroll in General Ed. Courses:
    • Math 102/110
    • Psychology 201
    • BIO 210/211
    • English 101/102
    • Computer Course
    • Chem 110
  • Meet Admission requirement to be MLT interview eligible.  Refer to online advisory manual.

PROGRAM NOTES

  1. A successful interview by the Medical Laboratory Committee is required prior to acceptance.
  2. Occasionally, for certain highly qualified applicants, one or more of the objective criteria may be waived or modified.
  3. Course substitutes must be approved by the Program Director.
  4. Transfer of credit for both MLT and non-MLT courses will be determined by Program Director.

  7. Students are required to purchase and maintain standard white uniforms, fluid-resistant laboratory coats, white shoes and safety equipment at an approximate total cost of $300.
  8. Preclinical practice for phlebotomy is performed on fellow classmates. Students are expected to act as patients for classmates to practice phlebotomy skills.
  9. Students must meet professional standards of practice to be placed in clinical rotation.
  10. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the examination offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) to earn the designation Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).

Special Requirements

Students are required to purchase and maintain standard white uniforms, fluid-resistant laboratory coats, white shoes and safety equipment at an approximate total cost of $300.  The American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification examination fee is approximately $200.00.

Students must attain a grade of “C” in all curriculum courses to successfully complete the program.  No course may be repeated more than one time.  No more than 2 courses within the curriculum program may be repeated and only one Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT prefix) course may be repeated.

In addition to the college’s placement test and the admission requirements for the Health Sciences Department, specific eligibility and interview criteria to the Medical Laboratory Technology program include:

Acceptable eligibility criteria:

.    TEAS V for AH (September 2014 - Present): 60 total percent (minimum reading 70 percent, mathematics 68 percent, science 47 percent)
and MTC writing sample score of 30: or
