6.5 – Factoring in General

 

Steps to Factor –

 

            1.)  Write the polynomial in standard form.

 

            2.)  Factor out the Greatest Common Factor making sure the leading term is positive.

 

            3.)  Count the number of terms:

           

                        Two Terms:

 

                        Difference of Squares              

 

                        Difference of Cubes                 

 

                        Sum of Cubes                          

 

 

                        Three Terms:

                       

                       

 

                       

                        Four Terms

 

                        Grouping Method

 

            4.)  Make sure the polynomial is completely factored

 

            5.)  Check your work by multiplying back through.
