What is an equation?             ( has an = )

·        Def. –

·        Can solve

·        You can +, –, • , and ÷ to one side of an equation as long as you do the same thing to the other side of the equation.

What is a linear equation?     ( all variables have an exponent of one )

            Def. -

            To Solve:

1.)  Simplify each side of the equation.

2.)  Get the variables you are solving for on one side of the equation.

3.)  Isolate the variable by using PEMDAS backwards.

            4.)  Check the answer!

Examples:

1.)  x – 4 = 7                                                    2.)    8x = 56                                                        3.)

4.)  3m – 11 = 9m + 5                                                                5.)  5t + 72 +8t = 17t – 28 + 11t

6.) -7 + 6n + 21 = 28 + 6n                                                         7.)  P = a + b + 2c;  solve for c.
