2.3 – Venn Diagrams and Set Operations
Venn Diagrams –
Universal Set, U – all the elements being considered in a problem or example.
Relationships –
1. Disjoint Sets: Two sets with no elements in common.
2. Proper Subsets:
![]()
3. Equal Sets: A = B
4. Sets with common elements: Set A and set B have at least one element in common.
Complement of a set –
The complement of set A is the set of all elements in the universal set, but not in set A.

![]()
Ex.: p.76 #5 - 16
Intersection –
the set of all elements in both set A and set B is called the intersection.

![]()
Union –
the set of all elements in set A or set B is called the union.

Ex.: p.76 #17 – 92
HW: p.76 #5 – 39odd, 67-77odd
