4.5 – Exponential and Logarithmic Equations

Exponential Properties -

•  if and only if x = y

• if  a > 1 and m < n, then

• if  0 < a < 1 and m < n, then

Ex.:  Solve the following equations.

Exponential and Logarithmic Equations –

            To Solve:    Get the equation in one of the following four forms.

                        1.) 

·        where b > 0 and  

·        Solve by taking the log of both sides.

                        2.) 

·        where f(x) > 0  and a is a number.

·        Solve by changing to exponential form.

                        3.) 

·        Solve by setting f(x) = g(x) and solving algebraically.

                        4.) 

·        Solve by setting f(x) = g(x) and solving algebraically.
