Placement
- Students taking Mathematics courses at Midlands Technical College are required to demonstrate a likelihood of success in the course in which they enroll. This can be accomplished by completing the required prerequisite courses or through a placement exam.
- When a placement exam is administered at a high school, the Numerical and Elementary Algebra sections of the Asset exam are given. This is a timed, pencil and paper exam. Those students placing into MAT 102 must come to Student Assessment at Midlands Technical College for the Intermediate Algebra section of the Asset exam for possible placement into MAT 110, MAT 120, or MAT 122.
- Students at Midlands Technical College may also take the COMPASS placement exam. This is a computer adaptive exam that is not timed. A scientific calculator is allowed. Students placing into MAT 110 should contact the Department Chair of Mathematics for possible placement into MAT 111, MAT 130, MAT 132 or MAT 140. A student may retake the COMPASS exam for a $10 fee.
- The Mathematics department also offers exemption exams for MAT 101 and MAT 102 that may be taken the first three days of class through Student Assessment or by arrangement with the Mathematics department. Students scoring 70% or better are allowed to enroll in a subsequent course.
