International Student
Arranging Travel to the United States

International students must arrange for transportation to Columbia, South Carolina no later than one month before registration ends. This will allow time to obtain a residence, transportation, take the school placement test, be academically advised and register for classes.

Before you purchase an airline ticket, you should shop for the best price. Ask for a student rate. If you book your ticket several months/weeks in advance, you may receive an additional discount.

The Council for International Education Exchange (CIEE) arranges trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific passage for groups and individuals. CIEE also sells the International Student Identification Card, which provides for reduced air, bus and train tickets; accommodations discounts in major cites; discounts for certain services and shopping, and traveler’s health and accident insurance for the duration of your trip. Travel arrangements through the CIEE are optional, and are not required by MTC.

Luggage and Baggage:

Please do not send baggage or packages in advance of your arrival because Midlands Technical College cannot accept them or store them for you.

It is best to bring at least two changes of clothes and basic toiletry and medical items, along with your immigration paperwork in your carry on baggage. If you ship any items separately, you will have to make US Customs arrangements. It would be best to come with all your basic supplies and then allow your family or friends to ship your other items to you at your new residence.

Finances/Money:

Many students find it more convenient to exchange their local currency for U.S. dollars before their departure. It is dangerous to travel with large amounts of cash. A small amount of cash will be needed to purchase items during travel and immediately upon arrival in the US. A credit card (Visa or MasterCard) is acceptable to almost every business and is valuable to obtain.

Some students make arrangements for funds to be transferred in U.S. dollars to a U.S. bank before they arrive in the U.S., and that money is available immediately upon arrival. Foreign currency is not available in most U.S. cities, and all local businesses accept only U.S. currency.

Students arriving in the U.S. should have sufficient funds to cover expenses until they arrive on campus. The amount depends on individual travel plans. Most students choose to use traveler’s checks, which may be obtained at banks or travel offices and can be cashed by most businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and airports.

Coming to campus:

Immediately upon arrival, you should plan to contact the International Student Coordinator and arrange an appointment to meet. This date can be no later than the date specified on your I-20 form. There will be an orientation program to become familiar with the campus and its resources. You also have several personal and academic chores to do.
