 Human Services Program

PROGRAM GOALS

The Human Services Program fulfills its mission of service by striving for excellence in four distinct ways.

  1. Student Development

    1. To allow each student and equal opportunity to achieve a relevant, and stimulating college program, regardless of financial, ethnic, racial, sexual, or physical background.

    2. To provide both regular and available academic and career advising to all students in their completion of their plans of study and subsequent entry-level decisions for career choice(s) and continued professional development.

    3. To develop in students an awareness of their individual strengths and potentials from both a personal and professional level.

    4. To create in students a clarification of personal and interpersonal values and respect for the rights, privileges, and motives of others.

    5. To provide opportunities for students to share with their peers, ideas, issues, and insights into the spectrum of today’s social progress and problems.

  2. Curriculum Development

    1. To enable students to develop intellectually from a generic, inter-disciplinary plan of study preparing them for various entry and middle level positions in the Human Services job cluster.

    2. To establish a competent knowledge and informational base in the behavioral and social sciences from which appropriate and specific skills can evolve.

    3. To develop competent interventional and management skills in students in the diagnosis, treatment planning, and effecting of behavioral changes in clients.

    4. To exercise the greatest possible number of academic options in developing the most relevant inter-disciplinary plan of study for each individual student.

    5. To design individualized and progressive practical field experiences for students to ensure the timely and meaningful application of knowledge and skills developed in the program.

  3. College Community

    1. To continuously support the development of interdisciplinary opportunities for all students.

    2. To assist in the development and training of student life activities and programs.

    3. To explore and research relevant academic sharing with other area institutions of higher education.

    4. To promote the continued development of human services education throughout the South Carolina System.

    5. To work cooperatively with community colleges in the articulation of transfer procedures and acceptance of related credits earned.

    6. To provide technical assistance and development support to mutually purposeful research projects and grant proposals on the campus as a whole.

    7. To maintain active membership and participation in professional human services organizations in order to maintain current awareness and response to present and future trends in the human services field.

  4. Midlands Community

    1. To extend the Human Services program to the immediate regional community as a resource to solving social and mental health issues.

    2. To develop strong and varied affiliations with local, regional, and state level agencies in providing for relevant and professional field experiences.

    3. To encourage volunteerism in the area community by supporting program-related organizations such as the student Human Services Organization.

    4. To conduct timely and regular community surveys and research service area needs.

    5. To provide innovative access and education to the nontraditional community student in their continuing lifelong education.
