·      BOOST YOUR ETHOS

(b/c they show time & effort was invested)

 

·      AID RETENTION OR MEMORY

 

·      CLARIFY INFORMATION

 

·      SERVE AS ATTENTION DEVICES

 

·      AID THE SPEAKER IN TERMS OF DELIVERY INCLUDING USE OF PROXEMICS

 

·      VERIFY/AUTHENTICATE SPEECH

 

 

HOW TO USE THEM:  PREPARATION

 

·      ASK THE QUESTION: “WILL THIS ENHANCE MY SPEECH?”  If no, then don’t use it!

·      ASK “IS THE VISUAL AID RELEVANT?”

If no, then don’t use it!

·      MUST BE LARGE ENOUGH FOR ALL TO SEE (24 font size or larger)

·      MUST BE SIMPLE/NOT CLUTTERED

·      MUST BE ATTRACTIVE

·      MUST PRACTICE WITH VISUAL AID AND EQUIPMENT BEFORE SPEECH

 

HOW TO USE THEM:  PERFORMANCE

 

·      USE THEM, DISCUSS THEM, AND PUT THEM AWAY

·      SPEAK TO YOUR AUDIENCE, NOT TO YOUR VISUAL AID!

·      USE ONLY SHORT VIDEO CLIPS OR MUSIC (30 seconds or less)

·      WORK THE VISUAL AID SEAMLESSLY INTO THE SPEECH

 

·      READ PP. 113-115 in your book as well as PP. 145-152
