Here are some questions and answers that may help you understand the ESL classes that we offer:
  
What ESL classes are taught at MTC?
The ESL classes at MTC are currently offered on the intermediate and advanced levels.

  • ESL 036: Listening, Speaking, and Grammar III
    helps intermediate students learn to speak and understand more easily in classroom discussions and other situations. (3 hour course)
     
  • ESL 037: Reading and Vocabulary III
     helps intermediate students develop a wider English vocabulary and improve reading skills (level: newspaper and other general reading). (3 hour course)
     
  • ESL 038: Writing and Grammar III
    helps intermediate students learn grammar and write paragraphs and longer papers. (3 hour course)
     
  • ESL 103: Spoken American English
    is a course that helps advanced students improve pronunciation so that they can communicate more clearly and easily with native speakers. (3 hour course)
     
  • ESL 100- Reading in English as a Second Language
    helps advanced students to develop a wider English vocabulary and improve reading skills so that they can read professional and academic articles. (3 hour course)
     
  • ESL 110- Introduction to Composition for English as a Second Language
    prepares students to write longer and more complicated papers for work or college preparation. (3 hour course)
Can students begin to learn English in the ESL program at Midlands Tech?
At this time, Midlands Technical College does not offer beginning classes in ESL. Students must be at least intermediate learners. For beginning students who do not know any English, classes are available at other schools. For information for beginning students, click here.

  
Will students need additional developmental courses after ESL and before college?
No. The ESL courses are equal to the developmental courses. Click here to see a chart showing the similar courses.
What is the cost?
For most students, one class, with books and fees, will cost about $350. You must see a counselor to find out what price you must pay. For more information, click here.
  
How do students enroll at Midlands Tech?
There are several ways to enroll. To decide which is best for you, you must see a counselor.

What tests must a student take?
ESL students may take the COMPASS or the COMPASS/ESL to determine which classes they need.  Click here for information on testing for ESL students.

I-20 or F-1 students (student visas) must take the TOEFL before applying to Midlands Tech. For more information about tests and other requirements for students ON STUDENT VISAS ONLY, click here.
  
What is the Certificate in English as a Second Language At Midlands Tech?

When are the courses taught?

Who are the teachers?
Every ESL teacher at MTC is a certified ESL teacher with experience. Most classes are taught by full-time teachers.
  
When do classes meet?
Most classes meet two or three times a week, for a total of three hours. Most classes are taught in the morning or evening on the Beltline Campus.

What program should I enroll in?
You have a choice:
  1. You may enroll in a program leading to a degree, such as nursing or college transfer if you want to continue your education.
  2. You may enroll in the Certificate in English as a Second Language if you want only to learn English.
  3. You may enroll through Continuing Education.

What kind of visa or immigration status do students need at MTC?
Students may be citizens, permanent residents (green cards), or almost any other type of visa.

Currently, if you are here on a student visa (F-1) and need an I-20 form, you will need to have a score of 500 on the TOEFL or 173 on the new computer TOEFL. You will need other things as well; click here for more information.

Students on other types of visas, including F-2 (students' wives or husbands) do not need to have a TOEFL score.
