ESL COURSES

Courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) are described below. These are explanations to help students and advisors, not the official descriptions that will appear in the catalogue.

  • ESL 036 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE: Speaking & Listening III

ESL 030 is designed to prepare students with ESL needs to speak English in a variety of everyday, academic, and professional settings. Speaking and listening activities also develop students’ skills in listening comprehension and note-taking in English. (Prerequisite: placement) 

  • ESL 037 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE: Reading III (=RDG 035)

ESL 031 is designed to prepare students with ESL needs in reading English for advanced intermediate courses in English skills. Reading assignments develop themes in contemporary American society, with an emphasis on education and business. (Prerequisite: placement)

  • ESL 038 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE: Composition and Grammar   III (=ENG 035)

ESL 038 is designed to prepare students with ESL needs in English grammar and writing for advanced intermediate courses in English skills. Writing assignments develop themes in contemporary American society, with an emphasis on education and business. (Prerequisite: placement)

  • ESL 100 Reading in English as a Second Language (=RDG 100)

    ESL 100helps advanced students to develop a wider English vocabulary and improve reading skills so that they can read professional and academic articles. (Prerequisite: ESL 037 or equivalent placement score)

  • ESL 110 Introduction to Composition for English as a Second Language  (=ENG 100)

    ESL 110 prepares students to
    write longer and more complicated papers for work or college preparation. (Prerequisite: ESL 037 and 038 or equivalent placement scores)

     

  • ESL 104 SPOKEN AMERICAN ENGLISH

This course introduces ESL students to issues in American English pronunciation, including stress, intonation, and phonetic patterns, with an emphasis on applying these principles to produce clear and comprehensible spoken English. (Prerequisite: ESL 036 or placement)
