Does MTC offer special sections of curriculum English courses (ENG 100, 101, and 102) just for international students?

MTC offers sections of ENG 100, 101, and 102 designated for international students. However, because of the low number of students wanting a particular course at a particular time, no sections will be made up entirely of international students.

Are these ESL courses?

No. These are the same English courses that native speakers of English take as the English requirement for most degrees. MTC does offer ESL courses in reading, writing, speaking, and listening at intermediate and advanced levels. Click here for more information on ESL classes at MTC.

How are the sections of ENG 100, 101, and 102 different from the other sections?

The main differences are that the teachers in these sections will have a background in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) and will enjoy working with international students, and will try to pick readings and topics for writing that will be interesting to everyone. Compared to the assignments in other sections, the writing topics will not require as much familiarity with the details and history of US culture. Teachers usually use the portfolio system of grading composition, which allows student to revise papers as many times as they like. Most often, these are full-time teachers who are able to hold regular office hours when they try to be available for extra assistance. Also other international students will probably enroll in those sections, so no one will feel out of place.

Do these sections use different textbooks and have different requirements?

No. These sections use the same textbooks, objectives, and requirements as the other sections of these courses. The difference in the sections is in the readings the teachers select and the teaching and grading techniques they use.

Are these sections marked in any way on transcripts?

No. Since many native speakers enroll in these same sections, they are recorded simply with the course number.

Are international students required to enroll in these sections?

No. International students may enroll in any section of any course they are qualified to take, based on placement scores and prerequisites.

Which sections are recommended for international students?

The sections are listed here:

What should I do if I cannot take the sections listed?

You can enroll in any section that fits your schedule, but you might want to try to enroll in sections taught by the following teachers, who also have experience with ESL and international students:

Cindy Rogers

Laurie Cox

Nancy Kreml

Travis Gordon

Laurie Cox

Douglas Capps

Diane Carr

What should I do if the sections are full?

If you find that the sections recommended for international students are full, go to the instructor listed for the section you want. some places amy still be available for international students only.

Should I take English courses during the summer semester?

Probably not. You may enroll in courses during any semester, but you should take English courses during a long semester, either Fall or Spring, to give yourself the best chance of learning as much English as you can and to make the best grade that you can make. Most English courses require much reading and writing, and you need time to do your best on each. We do not recommend any sections of English for International Students during the summer.
