The Upward Bound staff consists of three full-time and approximately 20 part-time staff.
The full-time staff consists of:
Sinitra Johnson became the Upward Bound Director in May, 2012 and previously worked for the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) at Midlands Technical College for 10 years. She is a native of Laurens, SC and attended Laurens High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Education degree in Guidance and Counseling Services from Clemson University. While at USC, she participated in the TRIO Program, Student Support Services. It was from her participation in SSS that she changed her educational and career goals from becoming a social worker to working with access programs.
Sinitra is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc and First Nazareth Baptist Church. Her motto is a quote from Marian Wright Edelman, "Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it".
Sinitra is responsible for project administration, parent involvement initiatives and staff development.
Tanya Martin graduated from Irmo High School in 2004 and then moved the Alamosa, CO to attend Adams State University (ASU). During her time at ASU she received her Bachelor's and Master's degree in Business Administration. With the slogan "Great Stories Begin Here", Tanya started her first job as an Academic Counselor for Student Support Services at ASU; where she grew a passion for working with at-risk and disadvantaged youth. In hopes of helping a larger student population, Tanya continued her career by becoming the Associate Director of the Tutoring & Testing Center at ASU. This gave her the opportunity to provide support and resources for students struggling to overcome their academic barriers.
Although, Tanya loves the majestic scenery of Colorado, she has decided to move back to her hometown and work with the youth around her community. She aspires to show young adults that despite the obstacles and barriers that may get in the way, ultimately, anything is possible!
Cheneeka Nash is the Administrative Specialist for Upward Bound. She maintains student files and database, schedule appointnments, assist with budget, create correspondence, order supplies, and conduct all general office duties. She is from Madison, Georgia. She graduated from Morgan County High School. Cheneeka received a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Paine College.
The part-time staff consists of:
- Enrichment Teacher and Academic Tutor- Joleesa A. Johnson
Joleesa Johnson is an August 2012 graduate of Winthrop University. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Psychology. During her time at Winthrop she was involved and worked with the Peer Mentoring Program for 3 ½ years. She was also a part of S.O.A.R (Serving Others and Reflecting) where she was on their executive board for a year. She also volunteered quite a bit with a local After-School program. Because of her involvement in guiding and helping others she is in the process of trying to decide whether to pursue her Masters in teaching high school science or becoming a counselor to help high school juniors/ seniors prepare for college and freshman college students adjust to college life. Her ultimate life goal is to build an at-risk youth community center.
During the years Joleesa spent at Winthrop her passion has turned from helping children and young adults in the medical sense to helping youth succeed and reach their goals. Joleesa is also a product of the TRiO program and admires the program for what they do for students like her. She is a member of Grace Heritage Ministries and lives by her life's motto: "If I can help at least one person along the way, then my living shall not be in vain."
