SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY

DESCRIPTION:A program designed to prepare surgical technologists to apply the principles of operating room techniques in meeting the health needs of the surgical patient. The student will gain skills that will prepare them to act as a Surgical Technologist in the circulating, scrubbing or first assistant roles.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Completion of the Pre-Health Care Certificate with a 2.5 GPA or higher
OR
HOBET Composite 46 % Minimum Reading 46 % MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OR
SAT Total 840 Minimum Verbal 430 MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OR
ACT 18 Comp Minimum Verbal 17 MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OTHER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • High school or college credits in at least 2 science/math courses (biology, chemistry, algebra, physics) are recommended.
  • A pre-admission interview by the Surgical Technology Admission Committee is required
  • 17 years of age by date of entry
  • Current First Aid, CPR certification and Hepatitis vaccination are required at time of entry.
  • Emotional and physical ability to carry out normal activities of (perioperative) patient care as determined by physical examination by physician and the completion of a personal health history.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of 51 semester credit hours is required for graduation. In addition to a 2.0 GPA maintenance of a minimum grade of "C" must be attained in all math, science and technology courses. No Course may be repeated more than once. (No more than two math, science or technology courses may be repeated.)

PROGRAM NOTES:

  1. A pre-admission interview is required prior to acceptance.
  2. SUR courses must be taken in the sequence as outlined in the Student Handbook.
  3. One or more of the objective criteria for admission may be waived or modified for certain highly qualified applicants.
  4. Course substitutes must be approved by the Program Director.
  5. Transfer of credit for both SUR and non-SUR courses will be determined by Program Director.
