MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY

DESCRIPTION:
A program designed to prepare Medical Laboratory Technicians to provide a wide range of clinical information for physicians to use in diagnosis and treatment. Students will acquire a working knowledge in the areas of hematology, urinalysis, parasitology, immunology, clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, blood banking and computerized instruments.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Specific admission criteria to the Medical Laboratory Technology Program include:
Completion of the Pre-Health Care Certificate with a 2.5 GPA or higher
OR
Completion of the Pre-Medical Laboratory Technology Program with a 2.0 GPA or higher
OR
HOBET Composite 50% Reading 50%, Math 50 %, Algebra 50% MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OR
SAT Total 910 Verbal 430; MAT 480 MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OR
ACT 19 Comp Verbal 18; Mat 23 MTC Writing Sample of 30 Within 3 years of applying to program
OTHER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
  • High school or college credits in science/math courses (algebra, biology, chemistry, physics) recommended
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Observation in clinical setting (may be completed after interview) by entry date
  • TOEFL Test for international students
  • Physical Examination with TB test (completed after interview) by entry date
  • Interview by Medical Laboratory Committee
  • Certified in basic first aid and CPR within three months of start date in program.
  • Emotional and physical ability to carry out normal activities of medical laboratory practice as determined by physical examination by a physician and the completion of a personal health history.
  • Satisfactory drug screen and criminal background check required prior to start date.

 

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of 80 semester credit hours is required for graduation. A minimum grade of "C" must be attained in all medical laboratory technology , mathematics and science courses to successfully complete the program.
  • No MLT, Science or Math course may be repeated more than one time.
  • No more than 2 courses may be repeated to obtain a passing grade.

PROGRAM NOTES:

  1. A pre-admission interview by the Medical Laboratory Committee is required prior to acceptance.
  2. Occasionally, for certain highly qualified applicants, one or more of the objective criteria may be waived or modified.
  3. Course substitutes must be approved by the Program Director.
  4. Transfer of credit for both MLT and non-MLT courses will be determined by Program Director.

  7. Students are required to purchase and maintain standard white uniforms, fluid-resistant laboratory coats, white shoes and safety equipment at an approximate total cost of $300.
  8. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the examination offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and the National Certification Agency (NCA) for Medical Laboratory Personnel and to earn the designation Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).
