DESCRIPTION:
A program designed to prepare dental assistants to assist the dentist in patient treatment. Skills in sterilization, dental x-rays, dental laboratory procedures and record keeping are developed.

- High school or college credits in science biology), math (algebra) and typing recommended.
- Diploma or high school equivalency required.
- Emotional and physical ability to carry out normal activities of dental assistant as determined by physical
examination by physician and the completion of a personal health history.
- Program interview.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of 48 semester credit hours is required for graduation. A minimum grade of "C" must attained in all dental assisting courses.
PROGRAM NOTES:
- A student wishing to enter Dental Assisting at MTC are admitted as Pre-Health Care Students(HLC6). HLC6 students are required to meet all DTA admissions criteria before they are accepted into the Dental Assisting Program.
- A pre-admission interview is required prior to acceptance.
- Dental Assisting courses must be taken in sequence.
- Students may not repeat a Dental Assisting course more than once, nor may they progress to the next semester until the course is passed.
- Students may repeat only two Dental Assisting courses.
- One or more of the objective criteria for admission may be waived or modified for certain highly qualified applicants.
- Course substitutes must be approved by the Program Director.
- Transfer of credit for both dental assisting and non-dental assisting courses will be determined by the Program Director.

- CPR certification and Hepatitis Vaccination are required prior to entering the first clinical term.
- A student must complete ENG 100 if their WSAMP is not a 30.
- Students are encouraged to join the Student American Dental Assistants' Association (cost $25) and to participate in its scheduled activities, including attendance at the annual meeting of the South Carolina Dental Assistants' Association. In addition, they are required to participate in scheduled activities, such as visits to elementary schools for dental health educational presentations, and to take three national examinations (ICE, RHS, GC.)
