Advisor Roles

Advisors serve in at least three roles:
  1. Managerial: In the managerial role advisors ensure that students register for courses consistent with their abilities and needs They assist students with registration processes and college procedures and guide students in their matriculation toward graduation within their chosen major.
  2. Informational: Using the Advisement Manual, the MTC college catalogue, the on-line academic advisement system, the class schedule and other resources, advisors should be able to answer most questions concerning academic policies and procedures. When unable to provide needed information, advisors should refer students to the office where they can obtain additional assistance.
  3. Developmental: The advisor listens with empathy when students voice concerns and refers students to other campus services as needed. As part of the developmental advising process, the advisor helps students improve their decision-making skills, assist students in career planning decisions, and encourages student self-responsibility.
