Information for Adults Preparing for College

Facing Your Fears

  1. Do you feel nervous and anxious about going to college? Are you concerned that your brain is rusty and that you won't be able to keep up with younger students? Do you feel overwhelmed by all the emphasis on computer skills, the internet, and rapidly changing technology? Are you afraid that you can't afford college? Do you feel guilty about depriving others while you do something that feels selfish?

If that’s the way you feel, then that means you are NORMAL! You will soon learn that your fellow classmates have the same fears and concerns.

  2. Do you fear not having enough money?

Public two-year colleges such as Midlands Technical College are typically much less expensive than private schools or 4-year schools. You can earn a certificate, degree or diploma that will ready you for employment in many of the fastest growing fields in this country’s future. You can also take the first two years of courses required to complete a 4-year degree at a much reduced cost.

Many employers are willing to pay their employees’ tuition knowing that the employee will be able to contribute more to the company with the knowledge gained in college.

Search the Internet or your nearby library to find ways to stretch the money you have available to you. You can do your own search for “living on less” to see how many tips there are to get more for your money. If you find a book that you feel may help you live on less, don’t buy it; check it out at the library!

Nearly all students are eligible for some type of financial award to attend college. Check with the financial aid office at the schools you are considering. You will get all the information necessary to find out what is available for you at no cost to you.
