COURSE DESCRIPTION:              This course is a supervised work experience for MOAA students, to work with local employers in the medical office field.

 

PREREQUISITES:                           AHS 102, CPT 170, MED 109, AOT 252

 

TEXTBOOK and OTHER REFERENCE MATERIALS: None required. (Medical Dictionary and Terminology guides may be helpful).

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of medical terminology and other medical knowledge gained through the MOAA curriculum.

 

  • Exhibit skills relevant to accuracy, efficiency and meeting necessary deadlines.

 

  • Demonstrate good work habits, work ethics, and accurate records management.

 

  • Maintain good attendance and punctuality.

 

  • Demonstrate interpersonal, team, and customer service skills.

 

  • Demonstrate professionalism and a positive attitude.

 

  • Use knowledge and skills gained in preparation for job seeking and interviewing.

 

CLASS ATTENDANCE:                  Students will be with the instructor for individual conferences instead of class attendance.

 

COURSE EVALUATION:               The grade for the practicum is completion of a final evaluation form to be completed by the employer. To pass the student must: meet all requirements as stated in this syllabus; verify completion of the required hours; submit a completed student evaluation form; pass the employer evaluation; and complete an updated resume and career portfolio for the Practicum Instructor..

 


COURSE REQUIREMENTS:        

 

  1. The practicum work schedule shall be determined between the work supervisor and the intern to afford a minimum of 160 hours on the job. Since the student is completing this practicum for academic credit, no pay is required. The student will observe all standards of legal ethics and confidentiality and comply with all office policies

 

  1. The student is responsible for scheduling an initial interview with the Practicum Instructor and completing all initial application paperwork prior to the beginning of the enrolled term. Individual conferences with the Practicum Instructor may be scheduled at any time during the semester on as “as needed” basis.

 

  1. Students are required to check their email accounts on a regular basis throughout the semester to maintain regular communication with the Practicum Instructor.

 

  1. The student is responsible for contacting the Practicum Instructor immediately upon accepting a practicum position. At this time, or within one week of the practicum start date, the student will submit pertinent employer information (such as company name, supervisor’s name, title, phone, email, fax, etc.)

 

  1. The student will regularly review the syllabus to assure all requirements are being met.

 

  1. The student hours worked must be verified by the employer using an acceptable time sheet signed by both the student and the supervisor.

 

  1. The student will submit to the Practicum Instructor a final evaluation form describing and evaluating their practicum experience. This form will be available on the Instructor’s webpage.

  1. The student will work with the Practicum Instructor to arrange a site visit to the student’s workplace sometime prior to the completion of the required hours.

 

  1. The student’s supervisor will submit a final evaluation form to the Practicum Instructor indicating the tasks assigned and rating the student’s performance. This form will be provided directly to the supervisor.

 

  1. Tardiness, absenteeism, and/or general disciplinary problems will not be tolerated and can result in the failure of the practicum.

 

  1. The student will be responsible for handling all software, hardware, and other types of equipment provided by the employer in a responsible and ethical manner.
