COURT REPORTING

Certificate in Business (CRP6)

DESCRIPTION: The Court Reporting Certificate is designed to complement the Computer-Aided Transcription Certificate. This profession requires development of extremely high machine shorthand and transcription skills. Upon completion, students are qualified for lucrative jobs in county and state courts, with government agencies or with private firms which report conventions or hearings.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:

  1. A minimum of 11 semester credit hours is required for graduation.
  2. The Court Reporting program is fully approved by the National Court Reporters Association which sets speed requirements for graduation as follows:
    1. Shorthand Speed: a minimum of three 5-minute tests with 95% accuracy on:
      225 wpm Q & A (two voice)
      200 wpm jury charge
      180 wpm literary
    2. Typing: at least three five-minute timed writings from unfamiliar material at a rate of 50 nwpm with a maximum of five errors.
    3. Internship: at least 50 verified hours with a minimum of 40 hours actual writing time on the stenotype machine with a working reporter and 40 pages of transcription.
    4. Transcription: a minimum rate of 10 pages of transcript in two hours.
PROGRAM NOTES:
  1. Airport Campus only.
  2. The semester-by-semester sequence for the program requirements must be followed as some courses are offered only one time each year. For exceptions, please call Brenda Sigwald (822-7037).
  3. Students must purchase their own shorthand machine (approximate cost: $400 used) and maintain adequate supplies of machine paper.
  4. In order to complete the program successfully, students will be expected to practice machine shorthand from 3 to 6 hours per day in order to acquire the necessary level of speed and accuracy to qualify them as court reporters.
