COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course emphasizes development of personal and professional skills required of an office worker in areas such as projecting a professional image, job seeking skills, office etiquette, ethics, and time and stress management.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will:
1. Describe the forces that are changing the office environment.
2. Identify career opportunities in the office field.
3. Define the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the work place.
4. Formulate personal, educational, and professional goals.
5. Identify and demonstrate personal and professional characteristics associated with job success.
6. Describe the role of ergonomics, safety, and health in the office.
7. Describe effective time and stress management techniques.
8. Identify the characteristics of an ethical office professional.
9. Explain the communication process and identify communication barriers.
10. Apply effective job-seeking skills.
11. Identify the major tasks of leadership.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS: Assignments are to be turned in on or before the announced due date. Late work will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: The departmental policy will apply. The number of absences allowed is equal to twice the number of times the course meets per week.
NOTE: Students must earn a grade of "C" or better in all the
courses offered within the Information Systems Department in order for the
grade to be counted toward graduation.
ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY: The academic honesty policy in the Student
Handbook will be implemented in this course. (See Appendix I, Student Code,
Section III-C, MTC Student Handbook, page 121.) All academic honesty issues
will be referred to the Office of the Director of Student Life.

The College may be closed because of inclement weather. This news should be available on the website at www.midlandstech.edu at the main phone number at 738-1400, and announced on WIS-TV and radio. Please check frequently in changeable weather for closings and re-openings. If the College closing or reopening means that you will have at least 30 minutes of a class, you should come to class. Please do not call the IST Department office or the President’s office with closure questions.
