PREREQUISITES:                   Students must have completed a minimum speed of 180 wpm

MATERIALS NEEDED:          Steno Machine, paper, 3.5” high-density diskettes, CDs or other means of storage such as a personal laptop.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:       This course involves actual writing on the shorthand machine with an experienced reporter in actual situations—depositions, trials, motions, hearings, etc.—and transcript production.

 

NOTE:                                     This course is an independent study and is taught through the use of court appearances and sessions with the instructor.  It includes a study of CAT, requiring a minimum of 50 hours of actual writing time under the supervision of a practicing realtime reporter using machine shorthand technology.  These hours may be obtained through 30 hours with an official trial Court Reporter; 10 hours  in an Administrative Hearing setting; and 10 hours in a deposition setting.  The objective of the internship program is that the student spend some time in a freelance office, a courtroom, and a realtime environment, observing and participating in the role of the court reporter using machine shorthand technology in the judicial or educational process.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:         Upon completion of this course, the student shall be able to:

 

1.      Submit a written narrative report summarizing the internship experience.  The written narrative shall include such things as a diary, new terminology encountered, new experiences, and activities/processes observed.

2.      Prepare 40 pages of salable transcript for course evaluation taken from the freelance, the official, or the realtime reporting internship.

3.      Submit the signed internship verification form.

 

INSTITUTIONAL STANDARDS:

 

1.      Internship shall not commence until a student completes the institution's 180 wpm requirements.

2.      The institution is responsible for assisting the student in arranging the internship experience.

3.      The internship shall include official, freelance, and realtime reporting experience where possible.

4.      The student shall not serve in the capacity of the actual reporter during participation in this internship period.

5.      Internship shall include a minimum of 50 hours of actual writing time under the supervision of a practicing court reporter using machine shorthand technology.  This must be verified in writing by the reporter(s) under whom the internship is being completed.

6.      A transcript shall be produced for educational and grading purposes only and shall not be sold.

7.      Records must be maintained to verify the internship experience including:

a)                  Internship verification form.

b)                  Narrative report

c)                  Transcript of internship experience

GRADING COMPUTATION:       Instructor's evaluation:  75 percent of final grade Supervising CR's evaluation: 
25 percent of final grade.

 

LATE ASSIGNMENTS:     Assignments are to be turned in on or before the announced due date. 
Late work will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor.

 

TEST COMPROMISE POLICY:        There will be no test compromises in any class (i.e. cheating). 
All test compromises will be dealt with according to
the student code.  (See Student Handbook, Page 46.)

 

NOTE:   Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all of the courses offered within the Information Systems Department in order for the grade to be counted toward graduation.

 

 

GRADUATION FILE REQUIREMENT:

 

1.      Written narrative report of internship experience.

2.      All verified time records pertaining to the internship course

3.      Graded final transcript.

 

The Court Reporting Program at Midlands Technical College is National Court Reporting Association (NCRA) approved through 2012.   The objectives listed on this syllabus are requirements of NCRA and all syllabi were reviewed by NCRA representatives during the approval process.
