MATERIALS NEEDED:          Textbook, 3.5” high-density diskettes, CDs, or other means of storage such as a personal laptop, steno machine, steno paper, PDR and medical references provided by instructor.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:    This course is a study of medical terms, definitions, root words, prefixes and suffixes with machine theory application of medical terms. 

 

NOTE:                                    This course is taught through the use of lecture, live dictation, taped dictation, videos, textbook, supplemental materials, field trips, guest speakers, and medical tutorials.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:      Upon completion of this course, the student shall be able to:

 

1.      Demonstrate understanding and application of medical

terminology and anatomy through transcript production.

 

2.      Demonstrate the ability to write and accurately transcribe

untimed computer-compatible medical dictation.

 

3.   Demonstrate knowledge of medical brief forms through

 systematic testing and transcript production.

 

                                    4.   Research and make oral presentations on psychological and

 physical diseases, drugs, and body systems and functions.

 

5.  Research names, descriptions of diseases, drugs, etc. through
                 use of the PDR , other related research materials, and the Internet.

 

6.      Demonstrate knowledge of body systems and functions,

psychological and physical diseases, drugs and medical information
through systematic testing and/or transcript production.

 

7. Participate in medicolegal discussions and debates.

GRADING COMPUTATION:     The Final grade will be based on 75 percent of Daily Grades and Tests; 25 percent
of Class Participation
.

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:       All make-up work/tests/quizzes given will be at the discretion of the instructor.

 

LATE ASSIGNMENTS:         Assignments are to be turned in on or before the announced due date.  Late work will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor.

 

WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS:        All dates on this course outline are estimated and assignments may be changed at any time at the discretion of the instructor.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:       The departmental policy will apply.  The number of absences allowed is equal to twice the number of times the course meets per week.
Once a student’s absences reach the total number allowed for the semester, they must visit the Student Counseling Services to prevent immediately being

                                                  withdrawn from the class.  NO EXCEPTIONS!
                                                   Four (4) Tardies will be counted as one absence. You MUST BE in class and UP by
                                                   the start time of class or you will be tardy.

CAMPUS EMERGENCY PROTOCOL:    Students and employees are asked to report safety concerns or suspicious activities to Campus Security at 7199 (on campus), or 738-7199 (cell phone and off campus).  In the

TEST COMPROMISE POLICY
:   There will be no test compromises in any class (i.e. cheating).  All test
compromises will be dealt with according to the student code.  (See Student Handbook.)

NOTE:     Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all of the courses offered within the

     Information Systems Department in order for the grade to be counted toward graduation.
