PREREQUISITES:                 Typing speed of 30 nwpm or advisor approval

 

COREQUISITES:                  None

 

MATERIALS NEEDED:        Steno Machine, paper, books, tape recorder, 3.5” high-density

Diskettes, CDR’s or some other type of removable media.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:    This course includes keyboarding on the pc, with emphasis on speed and
accuracy using the touch system.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:      Upon completion of this course, the student shall be able to:

 

1.      Identify the hardware components of a computer system.

 

2.      Describe how computers store and process information.

 

3.      List some basic operating system commands to coordinate

computer activities and files.

 

4.      Recall common computer terminology and concepts to become a

more effective user of computer hardware and software.

 

5.      Use word processing software to create, edit, and print court

reporting transcripts.

 

6.      Demonstrate satisfactory keyboarding skills by passing two

5-minute timed writings from unfamiliar material of 60 gross words per minute
with five or less errors.  Correction of errors is permitted during the
5-minute testing period.

 

7.      Demonstrate the ability to proofread and edit work produced on

the computer in a satisfactory manner.

 

8.      Identify and explain the system support services available for the

computer and applicable software.

 

9.      Identify a knowledge of CAT software and the operation

and function of electronic writers.

GRADING COMPUTATION:          The final Grade will be based 50 percent on ending Speed

Tests Grade and 50 percent on Objective Tests/Daily Grade.

                                                             

 

MAKE-UP POLICY:                         All make-up work/tests/quizzes given will be at the discretion of the

instructor.

 

LATE ASSIGNMENTS:         Assignments are to be turned in on or before the announced due date.  Late work
will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:      The departmental policy will apply.  The number of absences allowed is equal to
twice the number of times the course meets per week.

 

TEST COMPROMISE POLICY:      There will be no test compromises in any class (i.e. cheating).  All test compromises will be dealt with according to the student code.  (See Student Handbook.)

 

NOTES

Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all of the courses offered within the

Information Systems Department in order for the grade to be counted toward graduation.

 

1.      Tests are graded by the software and will only be accepted if it is 60 wpm with 5 or less errors.

2.      Paragraphing, spacing, and capitalization should be identical to the unfamiliar text being used.

 

The Court Reporting Program at Midlands Technical College is National Court Reporting Association (NCRA) approved through 2012.   The objectives listed on this syllabus are requirements of NCRA and all syllabi were reviewed by NCRA representatives during the approval process.
