COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is a general survey of the issues, technologies, threats, and precautions with which an information technology professional must be familiar in today's environment.
STUDENT COMPETENCIES: Upon
successful completion of this course, the student should be able to perform the
following tasks:
1. Explain current trends and issues in IT
security.
2. Demonstrate fluency with security-related
terminology.
3. List and explain the different types of
security problems commonly encountered.
4. Demonstrate a working knowledge of
networking fundamentals, as applied in the security field.
5. Explain the different types of network
security issues, and their related solutions and safeguards.
6. Demonstrate a working knowledge of software
firewalls, and how to configure a firewall.
7. Explain the different types of
host-related security issues, and the safeguards and precautions that apply.
8. Explain the different types of server
security issues, and the safeguards and precautions that apply.
9. Explain the different types of application
security issues, and the safeguards and precautions that apply.
10. Explain or illustrate the operating
principles of common cryptographic methods.
11. Explain the function, applicability, and
use of common cryptographic systems as part of a security strategy.
12. Identify and explain the types of
compatibility problems that can arise between firewalls and cryptographic
systems, and the solutions that may be applied to these problems.
13. Identify and explain the main
business-related aspects of information system security, and how security should
be factored into an organization's technical and managerial structure.
CPT-282 uses lecture, class discussion, and
individually prepared homework assignments and research projects. Participant
learning will be assessed by a combination of written examinations, quizzes,
classroom discussion contribution, individually prepared homework assignments,
and a formal project, including an in-class presentation.

Academic integrity questions should be resolved by consulting the Student Code as documented in the Midlands Technical College Student Handbook. All issues of academic dishonesty will be referred to the director of Campus Life.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students may not miss more than 15% of scheduled classes, regardless of the reason for the absence. After exceeding this limit, a student will be withdrawn from the class by the instructor. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of the class period. Students not answering to the roll call at that time will be marked absent. Students arriving late may check-in with the instructor after class in order to be marked tardy. Three marks of tardy will count as one absence. Students are required to remain in class until class is dismissed, and will otherwise be marked absent, unless prior arrangements are made in advance with the instructor. Attendance records will not be changed retroactively after the scheduled class meeting.
NOTE: Students must earn a grade of a C or better in all the courses offered within the Information Systems Department in order for the grade to be counted toward graduation.

In the event of an emergency, student and employee protocol is to immediately call Campus Security or local 911. If an emergency occurs, employees and students may seek additional information and instructions via MTC Information Centers, email, college Intranet, the MTC website, campus voice mail and loud speakers.
The College may be closed because of inclement weather. This news should be available on the website at www.midlandstech.edu, at the main phone number at 738-1400, and announced on WIS-TV and radio. Please check frequently in changeable weather for closings and re-openings. If the College closing or reopening means that you will have at least 30 minutes of a class, you should come to class. Please do not call the IST Department office or the President’s office with closure questions.
