COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course examines the theory of operating systems and how the operating system theory is implemented in current operating systems. The course will use several operating system platforms such as: Microsoft Windows, UNIX, and IBM MVS. 

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be competent to perform the following tasks:

1. Identify the basic functions and associated command language of an operating system using examples of mainframe, midrange, and PC systems
2. Demonstrate an understanding of real and virtual memory, paging, processor scheduling, multiprocessing, concurrent processes, networking, and security mechanisms.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of IBM Job Control Language(JCL) and the ability to create simple multiple step job streams incorporating procedures and input and output disk files.
     

COURSE COMPETENCIES AND PERFORMANCE MEASURES:  As part of the Information System Technology Department’s ongoing learning outcome assessment activities, the following competencies have been developed to support the stated learning outcomes, together with performance measures to assess the students' success in attaining those competencies.

Measurement Instrument and Success Criteria: The success criterion is 50% of the students will correctly answer 80% of a set of embedded test questions related to this competency.

Course Competency: Be able to demonstrate an understanding of real and virtual memory, paging, processor scheduling, multi processing, concurrent processes, networking, and security mechanisms.

A 94 – 100
B 87 – 93
C 78 – 86
F 0 - 77

No incomplete grades will be given. Everyone must take the final exam.

Any deviation from this policy must be authorized by the Department Chairman.

ATTENDANCE POLICY: It is essential that you attend class in order to receive a passing grade. If you must miss class then please let the instructor know in advance, if possible. If you miss more than 4 classes for a class that meets 2 times a week, or 6 classes for a class that meets 3 times a week, then the instructor may withdraw you from the class.

The College may be closed because of inclement weather. This news should be available on the website at www.midlandstech.edu, at the main phone number at 738-1400, and announced on WIS-TV and radio. Please check frequently in changeable weather for closings and re-openings. If the College closing or reopening means that you will have at least 30 minutes of a class, you should come to class. Please do not call the IST Department office or the President’s office with closure questions.
