COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces data base models and the fundamentals of data base design. Topics include data base structure, database processing, and application programs, which access a database.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be competent to perform the following tasks:
1.
Determine need for, and objective of, a database management system (DBMS).
2. Determine the relationship between users, application
software, database software, and operating systems in a database system.
3.
Identify and organize data in terms of records within relational. Be familiar
with hierarchial
and network models.
4.
Determine the techniques for defining a database with fields in the various
records; access, insert, update and delete records using SQL.
5.
Design databases using various design schemas.
6.
Use first, second, and third normal forms.
Achievement of these competencies will be measured by a combination of methods.
COURSE COMPETENCIES AND
PERFORMANCE MEASURES: As part of the
Information System Technology Department’s ongoing learning outcome
assessment activities, the following competencies have been developed to
support the stated learning outcomes, together with performance measures to
assess the students' success in attaining those competencies.
Course Competency: Students will demonstrate understanding of the technical concepts involving the creation of normalized relational database tables and the use of the SQL commands.
Measurement Instrument and Success Criteria: The success criterion is that 70% of the students will answer 80% of the technical questions correctly.

ATTENDANCE
POLICY: It is important to support a policy that is clearly defined and unambiguous.
Therefore, the following class attendance policy applies:
Students cannot exceed four (4) absences for the Spring Semester and Fall
Semester.
Students cannot exceed three (3) absences for the Summer Semester.

If an emergency occurs, employees and students may seek additional information and instructions via MTC Information Centers, email, college Intranet, the MTC website, campus voice mail and loud speakers.
The College may be closed because of inclement weather. This news should be available on the website at www.midlandstech.edu, at the main phone number at 738-1400, and announced on WIS-TV and radio. Please check frequently in changeable weather for closings and re-openings. If the College closing or reopening means that you will have at least 30 minutes of a class, you should come to class. Please do not call the IST Department office or the President’s office with closure questions.
